Get in the Game!

When you’re sitting in the bleachers, don’t you ever get that feeling you can do better than the player or the coach? Don’t you get an urge to jump into the game and take over? Pay attention to this team building technique; at one point or another each and every one of us may have found ourselves in any of these positions.

Many of us agree that there are three types of personalities in our business: Players, Spectators and Quitters. I won’t spend a lot of time on Quitters as I like to keep a positive outlook on business. You may get a lot of quitters, so what? That’s just the way it is. Don’t take it personally; move on and always remember you are the one in control of your life. The choices you make on a daily basis affect your outcome.

Ha! The Spectators – this is a group with potential. Many of us are not born natural leaders, but with time and proper training we can change for the better. How many people do you know, no matter what their profession or activity, wait by the sidelines; assimilate; learn the steps or just sit there and watch what the leader will do next? I would say this is the majority. They want something better for themselves or their families but they are either not sure how to do it, not sold on the product, don’t have enough faith in the process or they just want to see how far you will go and how successful you will become before going all in.  When Spectators are part of your team nurture them, guide them, but make sure you do it on your own terms. You dictate how much time to spend with each individual. Make sure you don’t waste too much energy, you want to run on all cylinders with new customers and prospects and don’t want to run out of fuel for your Players.

Last but not least are the Players. They were ready before you even pitched them the idea. They already had a game plan when you were selling them the idea and they already had a list of prospects the day they signed up! This is the team you should run with most of the time. When the tide rises, all ships rise with it. Players create momentum, positive encouragement and fantastic results.

When I was younger, a group of friends and I would always use a saying to get stuff done: “Close your eyes and go like hell!”  We laughed about it, but as simple as it sounded, it motivated us enough to accomplish whatever the goal was. If you are part of the group on the sidelines, you owe it to yourself to jump in the game, that’s where all the fun begins and where great associations are made. Leave your fears behind. If you don’t take that step forward will you still be in the same place the following year- watching the Players move ahead? Your decision; your life!  I hope you try it and GSD!
